The Modern Electronic Library of the Faculty of Engineering

Despite the difficult circumstances through which our country is going, and that has directly affected all sectors, we have succeeded in the Faculty of Engineering to continue to progress and thrive. Many projects have been opened and launched in the Faculty of Engineering in recent years in addition to the renovation and enhancement of many facilities, laboratories and halls. The problem of the faculty’s students needing free access to the Internet, whether to prepare their graduation projects, letters or postgraduate research, remained for a long time one of the essential unsolved problems because the faculty’s was unable to finance a project that meets the students' research needs using modern computers and high-speed Internet access. However, with the insistence of the leadership of the faculty to move forward with the development process, the faculty has signed agreements of cooperation with several parties to support the faculty financially, and to allow these parties to benefit from the engineering expertise which the faculty has. These agreements have allowed moving to a higher level of cooperation making it possible to launch several projects in the faculty with the help of its new partners.

The E-library project of the Faculty of Engineering was a product of the fruitful cooperation between the faculty and the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, and its foundations and companies, which supported the project with all the electronic devices and requirements to establish a modern network connected to the Internet in high speed line. After the study of the project was done and put into operation, other parties such as Amran cement factory and Apex Consulting offered to participate in the library by providing additional equipment. The project went through many stages and took several months because of the country's conditions and the difficulty of importing modern computers in a short time. Finally, it was completed successfully by some of the faculty’s qualified experts, engineers and technicians in cooperation with experts from the Yemen Telecom Group and a general supervision of the Deanship of the faculty.

The result was an electronic library of thirty-one modern computers, an advanced server for network management, high-speed connecting devices, an Internet line of the fastest lines in the Republic of Yemen with fiber optics technology and the sixth version of the Internet addresses (IPv6), in addition to a solar energy system, and a security system of nine HQ cameras. The last stage of the project was the provision of a digital library with the largest possible number of books, references and new research papers, in addition to subscribing to some international scientific journals. That was a great challenge because, in the faculty of engineering, we constantly follow the legal steps to acquire books and references without violating the rights of property or intellectual rights. After communication and coordination with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the faculty was able to officially join one of the most important programs of the organization which provides direct free access to dozens of international publishing houses belonging to the most prestigious European and American universities to allow browsing and downloading thousands of books, references and International scientific journals. This access feature has been linked to the E-library network to be ready to provide unique research services for the first time in the Republic of Yemen.

In the faculty of engineering, we are very proud of such achievements because it came at a time when the difficult and catastrophic conditions of war caused many educational institutions in the country to retreat, and we were able to continue to maintain the academic level in our faculty and even develop and make a huge progress despite the lack of financial resources. Because we have what is more important and more precious. A group of distinguished minds who have a sincere desire to participate in making a positive difference which reflects on the society and our nation as a whole.

Our students’ projects have started to enter a new phase of professionalism and creativity

Students of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sana’a have recently presented a number of excellent and advanced scientific projects in all of the specializations and departments of the faculty. The students displayed great progress and mastery through transforming the knowledge and skills they have gained to feasible practical applications. Thus, laying the foundation stones in today's competitive market and ensuring their capacity and potential to the development of the community. If anything, these projects reflect the determination and perseverance of our students despite the difficult circumstances and obstacles they face daily that ultimately honed their talents. Moreover, such stunning projects prove beyond any doubt that our students are indeed capable of competing with other engineering students from all around the world regardless of the scarcity of financial resources.

The fields covered included advanced programming, artificial intelligence, mechanical and electronic aspects, data and signal transmission and processing, in addition to civil and architectural designs. Many students have succeeded to efficiently direct these projects to the service of social and technical sectors in the country. Amongst them all, the projects of the first mechatronics batch were the best; another proof of the faculty's success in qualifying the students of this new department. The Mechatronics students' projects included a variety of engineering applications such as software programming, mechanical projects, design of electronic circuits, and design of projects’ structures using a 3D printer, and in each part, they have achieved outstanding accomplishments. Whether these projects were Robots, control systems or simulations of smart tools and buildings, they were all designed according to the latest technology. One of these projects is the smart artificial limbs project, which was designed by some of the department's top students. This project, specifically, has gained great attention as a result of its effectiveness and importance in serving those who have lost any of their limbs especially due to the current war in our country.

Having a new batch of well qualified graduated students who managed to break all the barriers and obstacles created by the difficult current conditions is a great success of which we, in the faculty of Engineering, are proud. The faculty represented by its leaders and its academic and administrative staff will continue to provide unlimited support to the students to help them keep up this high level of performance, and we trust the ability of our students to impress everyone with more creativity and further progress at all levels.

Despite great challenges, The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sana'a is preparing to receive the year (2017 - 2018) with many achievements and more excellence

Represented by leading academic and administrative staff, The Faculty of Engineering constantly seeks to improve the quality of educational programs offered to students in addition to the modernization and development of equipment and educational facilities periodically to ensure the graduation of cadres fully capable of effectively serving the community, and to provide an appropriate learning environment for students. However, just like all the other educational institutions in the country, The Faculty suffered from the difficult and unstable conditions which are embodied in many obstacles and challenges facing the educational process. Despite all that, the administrators were able to stand in front of these challenges with patience and determination enabling The Faculty to receive the new year with many achievements after having implemented many developmental projects to the infrastructure and the equipment and facilities of the faculty.

The highlight of these achievements was the completion of the mechatronics building equipped with the latest laboratory and new equipment. Furthermore, to address the issue of the total power outages which was one of the greatest challenges, a solar power system was installed. Also, the facilities of the Faculty were developed and improved starting with the maintenance and updating of most laboratories and the necessary tools for the practical aspect of the educational programs, and reaching the renewal of the classrooms and equipping them with modern projectors, and ending with the reclamation of green spaces to provide an integrated learning environment that combines academic excellence and beauty. The decision to continue achievements and development despite the challenges reflected significantly on the students in the previous year who challenged the circumstances and continued to be creative and impressed everyone with their engineering projects and innovations that participated in local and international exhibitions and competitions.

Today, in spite of these conditions, the Faculty of Engineering, Sana'a University is proud of its achievements, and is preparing for further progress in the new school year to provide a better quality and classier teaching and learning environment.
